Before the war, HMS Hythe was a cross-channel cargo steamer with the South East and Chatham Railways. In 1914 she was requisitioned by the Admiralty and saw service as a minesweeper and troop carrier in the Dardanelles.

On 28th October, 1915 she was ferrying troops from Mudros to Cape Helles when she was in a collision with HMS Sarnia and sank within ten minutes. 155 of the 275 men aboard HMS Hythe died, including members of the crew but mostly men of the 1/3rd Kent Field Company of the Royal Engineers.
